I was debating between the two sizes for awhile. The small size would be best for my dogs, since they're smaller. The small size would have been perfect for one of them to eat out of at a time, but usually, both my dogs eat at the same time. I choose the bigger size for this reason.
The first time I put the bowl down with dry dog food in it. The older dog looked at me like I was crazy and preceded to eat from her normal bowl. The younger dog dove right in. The younger dog is the guilty one who eats the quickest and sometimes that makes her sick. The older dog would normally get a mouth full, spit them out on the tray, and then eat piece by piece from there.
The bowl did help make the younger dog eat slower. She had to hunt around on the bowl to get a few pieces of food. The raised parts helped keep her from grabbing a mouthful. It made her work for her food more.
It's great that the bowl is dishwasher safe, so it's easy to clean. I didn't get lucky with the "no mess" bit of this bowl. The younger dog will decide the bowl is a chew toy every once in awhile. She'll pick up the bowl by the raised parts and carry it off. Usually, there's no food in it when she carries it to her dog bed, but there's been a few times she's left a trail of dog food from her carrying the bowl around.
The bowl is different and does help keep them from eating too quickly. The bowl makes dogs work for their food more. It would work fantastic if my younger dog stopped thinking it was another one of her toys.
